About the event
A celebration of Palestinian textiles with a screening of The Embroiderers and talk by The Tatreez Collective hosted by Textile Artist and educator Caitlin Hinshelwood and Craft Show to raise much needed funds.
We’re looking forward to a special night celebrating Palestinian textiles, amplifying Palestinian textile cultures and raising funds for two fantastic initiatives working to protect Palestinian lives and cultural heritage.
Join us for a special screening of The Embroiderers by Maeve Brennan, a touching film documenting six women working with Palestinian embroidery today. We’lll then welcome The Tatreez Collective to talk us through their Tatreez embroidery, its meanings and they’ll share examples of their Palestinian embroidery, including family heirlooms, in person.
There’ll be an opportunity to take a beautiful piece of handmade textiles home with you too, from a small group of makers who’ll also be sharing their work.
Maeve’s film The Embroiderers (2016) documents the stories of six women working with Palestinian embroidery today. Through personal accounts, the film explores the significance of this intimate and deeply political material and how it continues to give form to ideas of Palestinian heritage, history, labour and resistance. Commissioned and produced by The Palestinian Museum, Birzeit.
The Tatreez Collective is committed to documenting the cultural heritage of Palestine through the art of Palestinian embroidery. The word ‘tatreez’ is Arabic for embroidery, and while the term is used to refer to embroidery more broadly, in the Palestinian context it is understood to refer to cross-stitch.
The evening will raise much needed funds for two fantastic initiatives working to protect Palestinian lives and cultural heritage - The Tartreez Institute and Palestine Red Crescent Society.
The Tatreez Institute, also known as Tatreez & Tea, is a Palestinian-led educational arts initiative focused on the preservation, documentation and research of textiles in the South West Asia & North Africa region. Embroidery, or tatreez, is a centuries-old practice preserved through intergenerational exchange over a cup of tea, or shay. Inspired by generations of fiber artists, The Tatreez Institute continues the rich traditions of embroidery, textile and storytelling of Palestine, the Palestinian diaspora and Greater Syria.
Palestine Red Crescent Society provides humanitarian assistance as well as health and social services to Palestinians whenever and wherever needed. It works towards preventing and allaying human suffering, protecting life and health, ensuring the respect of human dignity, preventing disease, and promoting health, social care and volunteering both in times of peace and war as well as during emergencies, crises and disasters.
The ticket price will cover the artist's fees and all additional funds raised will be split 50/50 between the two named charities. As ever, if the price of a ticket is prohibitive, please reach out we have space saved for you.Â
